19th Century Photographic Views
Of Egypt

On January 7, 1839 it was announced at the Academie des Sciences in Paris that Louise Jacques Mandé Daguerre had invented photography. Nine months later by October 1839 Horace Vernet was in Egypt with daguerreotype equipment photographing the ancient monuments.
Vernet was soon followed by other adventurous photography pioneers: Lotbiniére, Du Camp, Firth and those who are featured here both known and unknown.
